Greedy Bat Eaters versus Cruel Pig Killers: The Lose-Lose Battle of Divisive Discourse

Unsurprisingly, the circumstances and challenges brought about by COVID-19 pandemic have generated strong reactions. Among more notable, Canadian musician animal activist Bryan Adams made headlines when he went on a tirade social media denouncing ‘fucking bat eating, wet market selling, virus making greedy bastards’ advocating for veganism. This article uses this incident as prism through which to examine values assumptions informing some of central debates within mainstream advocacy movement today. Certainly, there is an urgent need critical re-evaluation policies practices that created conditions in viral pathogens can spread, especially those relating our treatment nonhuman animals (and relationship with nature broadly). However, roots problem are fundamentally structural, not attributable any one country or culture. The thoughtless use terms contribute politically charged rancorous public debate readily descends into lose-lose battle, may hinder efforts address complex collective concerns mutually cooperative manner. If represent turning point towards building equitable, sustainable, resilient world humans alike, kind fractioning currently being exacerbated divisive discourse must be eschewed favour greater recognition fundamental interconnectedness, including pluralistic understanding law.
